Can a used control unit be installed?

On many vehicles, a second-hand control unit can be used, but simply plugging it in is rarely enough. It may contain the donor vehicle VIN, immobiliser data, mileage, coding and component protection.

First, the part number and hardware version must be confirmed as compatible. We then decide whether to clone the original unit, reset the used unit or adapt it through online procedures.

If the original module still communicates, transferring its data usually gives the cleanest result. When it is badly damaged, memory may need to be read directly or some information reconstructed.

A used unit can reduce repair cost, but it must be selected and prepared correctly to avoid new faults or immobilising the vehicle.
